June 29 – BTO Did A1 Job Of TCB!

They were takin’ care of the business of becoming stars 50 years back! Bachman-Turner Overdrive– BTO – would hit the U.S. top 40 for the first time this day in 1974, with “Takin’ Care of Business.”

The song would only hit #12 (#3 in their native Canada) but would go on to be not only their trademark song but one of the most enduring rock hits of the decade – much more so than their follow-up “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” which was at the time a bigger hit. BTO formed out of Winnipeg and out of the Guess Who. Randy Bachman had been an integral part of that band and its early success (writing hits like “No Sugar Tonight” and “Undun”) but left in 1971. This song might have had something to do with that. He wrote an initial version of it while still in Guess Who, and Burton Cummings hated it. He also felt it was a rip-off of The Beatles “Paperback Writer” and they’d be sued if they recorded it. After his first post-Guess Who band, Bravebelt split up quickly (after Chad Allan, another Guess Who alumni, quit), he formed BTO with his brothers Robbie and Tim and Fred Turner.

They quickly became one of the first “hard rock” acts to hit mainstream radio in the ’70s and in Canada would place seven songs on the top 40 just in ’74-75 alone. Some were surprised they were out of Canada. In fact many assumed they were a “Southern Rock” band in the mode of Lynyrd Skynyrd. The similarity isn’t lost on the members of the band; Randy described their sound back then as “just good ol’ dancing rock and roll.” Bachman had originally planned on calling the song “White Collar”; his band had experience in writing work songs. They’d already had a hit in Canada with an uncharacteristically laid-back song called “Blue Collar.” If you happened to be in Vancouver in May 1994, you might have heard “T.C.B.” going on and on – Bachman led over 1300 guitarists in a 68-minute version of it!  No word on whether or not Neil Young was among them – Neil says “I feel Randy when I hear him play. He was my biggest influence when I was starting out” . Elsewhere, you might have heard the song in movies like About Schmidt, Two Weeks Notice and appropriately, the ’90 flick Takin’ Care of Business or in TV shows as varied as The Sopranos, That ’70s Show, Cold Case and King of the Hill.

BTO have broken up a few times but are active again with a fairly busy tour schedule across North America this summer.  They were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of fame in 2014, at which time they played… well, do you even need to ask which song?

  1. Nice shoutout for a couple of bands from my city. I was never much of a Guess Who fan; I more enjoyed BTO. Randy Bachman did a weekend radio show, ‘Randy Bachman’s Vinyl Tap with Randy Bachman’ on our national broadcaster CBC until a few years ago. It was an enjoyable mix of music and stories. He even did a Christmas special.

TCB is a pretty great rock standard – but 68 minutes? Yikes!

    1. from Winnipeg are you? Quite a lot of talent has come from there. I like both BTO and GW, clearly BTO are a bit more rock-oriented and Guess Who perhaps shone brightest on some of the more pop-oriented tunes.
We just got a free trial of Sirius Radio last month and I’ve found Randy B and his son Tal host a show about the Beatles weekly! They’re both pretty knowledgeable guys and fairly interesting to listen to.

      1. Yes, Winnipegger all my life so far. We do have a lot of talent here, that’s true. Folks here appreciate it and support musicians.

I did not know about the Sirius show, as I gave up that service a while back.

      2. I don’t know we’ll keep Sirius after the free trial but am really enjoying it so far.
You must really like ‘the Peg’! It looks like a nice city…in summer! Those winters would be too extreme for me…Toronto winters were too cold!

      3. I like it and always found work and life so why leave. It does get pretty cold. But we’re used to it. The summers are great though the last few have been shorter. That makes the winter a bit tougher…

We had the free trial and when I cancelled it Sirius kept offering ridiculously low prices so I kept it an extra couple of years. Started using Apple Music on CarPlay so no need, plus the renewal process started to approach normal.

      4. My bro went out to Alberta – first Ft McMurray then Edmonton and has stayed for many years though I don’t think he ever came to like the weather. Shorter summers- I actually saw a bit of that last few years I was in Ontario. through the ’90s and early ’00s the summers were definitely hotter and longer than ‘normal’

  2. Badfinger (Max)

This is one of the all time classic radio rock songs. Now radio has done a number on it (at least here)…and it’s probably at the top of my list of worn out…but it’s not BTO’s fault…I can still enjoy this every once in a while.

    1. Yep, it’s like ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ that way – fine rock song but overplayed to death on both sides of the border for several decades. I really like being surprised and hearing things like ‘Let it Ride’ or ‘Hey You’ every once in awhile by them.

Yes I do like hearing other stuff as well. Since I don’t listen to radio as much now…I can take TCB every once in a while now and love it.

  3. While I think it’s fair to say “Taking Care of Business” and “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” have been overexposed, I can still listen to and enjoy these and other songs I know by BTO. Nice to know they’re still around, including the two surviving co-founders. I see Randy’s son Tal Bachman, whose 1999 solo debut album I like and who apparently is coming out with a new album in just a couple of weeks, is part of the current line-up as well. I also see they’re going to be in New Jersey in Sep not far from me…

    1. I don’t hear ‘Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet’ much, despite how big a hit it was at the time, but TCB has really been a staple of FM radio for decades. Must’ve made a nice little bank account for Randy! He and Tal host a Beatles radio show I’ve found, they’re quite interesting to listen to and both about equally well-informed I think.

  4. “Blue Collar” is my favorite from them: that excursion into jazz at the end is amazing. They did some great songs; I like “Let It Ride” and “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet” better than “Takin’ Care Of Business,” mostly because the others weren’t played to death on the radio…
